In Mykolaiv, the Central District Court has selected a preventive measure for a man suspected of causing a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.

Judge Volodymyr Liashenko reviewed the petition for applying a preventive measure to a 26-year-old resident of one of the villages in the Pervomaiskyi district, who is suspected of committing a criminal offense under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

According to the materials of the petition, on December 20, during the nighttime, the suspect, while under the influence of alcohol, was driving a VAZ-2110 along a lit street in the village of Blahodatne, Pervomaiskyi district.

During his drive, he crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a pedestrian who was walking towards him along the edge of the roadway. The pedestrian succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the driver fled the accident site.

During the court hearing, the suspect did not contest the circumstances outlined in the petition and stated that he left the scene out of fear. He also mentioned that after the collision he stopped and approached the victim, which contradicts the testimony of a witness who reported that the vehicle stopped for a few seconds before quickly leaving.

The suspect requested the court to impose a preventive measure in the form of house arrest.

The defense lawyer supported his client's position and asked the court to apply a preventive measure of house arrest or to set a bail amount.

Following the review of the petition, the investigating judge decided to impose a preventive measure in the form of detention without setting a bail amount.
