Three Ukrainian nuclear power plants have largely resumed operations following the Russian attack on November 28, according to the IAEA.

Eight out of nine reactors at the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine nuclear power plants have resumed operations following the attack on November 28. The IAEA confirms its commitment to ensuring nuclear safety at these facilities despite the instability of the power grid.

Three operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Ukraine have significantly resumed electricity production after a sharp reduction in output last week, which was implemented as a precautionary measure due to yet another Russian attack on the country’s increasingly fragile energy system on November 28. This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on its website, as noted by UNN.

Details

It is noted that out of the nine reactors at the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine NPPs, eight are currently operational while one is shut down. Over the past week, most of them have gradually increased their capacity following the massive strike by Russia on November 28 against the electrical infrastructure. However, some external transmission lines remain disconnected.

He added that, nevertheless, "the fragile situation with the power grid remains a source of deep concern, and we will continue to closely monitor relevant events, including subsequent visits by experts to the electrical substations that the nuclear power plants depend on." He called for "maximum restraint to ensure that no actions affecting external electricity supply and nuclear safety are taken." The statement did not specify who exactly attacked the Ukrainian energy system, nor did it indicate to whom this appeal was directed.

The IAEA also noted in its message that, "despite the consequences of the military conflict, including frequent alerts about air raids," IAEA teams at the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, South Ukraine, and Chernobyl NPPs reported that nuclear safety and security at these facilities are being maintained.

Reminder

The Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine NPPs reduced their output during the missile attack by the Russian Federation on November 28. One reactor unit at the Rivne NPP was disconnected from the grid, and the Khmelnytskyi NPP lost two transmission lines.
