SubscribeAs the expert notes, President Zelensky stated in his interview with Sky News that the war will only end when Ukraine receives security guarantees within NATO. However, we also know that such a prospect is not part of Trump's plans.
“What does it mean that the war will 'finally end when Ukraine becomes a NATO member'? Perhaps the war will conclude with a frozen conflict, some ceasefire conditions, or a truce. But it doesn't necessarily mean it will end completely. It might evolve into a Cold War phase or a low to medium-intensity conflict,” reflects Vadim Karasev.
In this context, the political scientist recalls Israel, which lives under conditions of what appears to be peace, but simultaneously experiences a low to medium-intensity conflict: sometimes it freezes, sometimes it thaws for a while, then it freezes again. They signed an agreement with “Hezbollah,” but that is not a definitive resolution.
“Therefore, Zelensky might have meant this: the issue of security and the danger of war for Ukraine will not be resolved now, not immediately, but rather when Ukraine can be granted NATO membership status with guarantees from Article Five, along with collective security assurances from the entire North Atlantic Alliance,” explains Vadim Karasev.
