An avalanche comprising over 1,200 cubic meters of snow has descended from the slope of Bretskул in the Carpathians. Rescuers have urged tourists to refrain from hiking in the mountains.
The Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology has warned of significant avalanche danger in the highlands of Ivano-Frankivsk region, declaring a third – orange – level of danger on January 7.
“An avalanche of storm snow, with a volume of 1,280 cubic meters, has occurred on the eastern slope of Mount Bretskул. There are no casualties or injuries,” the Hydrometeorological Center reported.
The Main Department of the State Emergency Service in Ivano-Frankivsk region has called on tourists to heed the storm warning and postpone their trips to the Carpathians. Strong winds of up to 40 m/s are expected in the highlands on January 7.
Additionally, Mount Bretskул (1,911 m) is the closest neighbor to Hoverla and is located at the border of Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. To the north of Bretskул lies a cirque – a glacial basin from which the Prut River originates.
