Growing healthy seedlings is the initial step towards a bountiful harvest. One such method is cultivating seedlings in a kitchen sponge – a technique that impresses with its simplicity and effectiveness. For more details, read UkrMedia.

Benefits of this method

The sponge offers several significant advantages over traditional soil:

  • no need to clean dirt after working;
  • you can observe how the seeds germinate and the roots develop;
  • seeds germinate much faster;
  • this method requires minimal space;
  • sponges can be reused if the seeds do not sprout;
  • it's a great opportunity for interesting experiments for adults.

Various crops can be successfully sprouted in sponges, ranging from carrots and radishes to herbs, lettuce, watercress, mustard, tomatoes, and much more.

How to properly plant seeds in a sponge

For this method, choose sponges that have not been treated with cleaning or antibacterial agents. It is recommended to first treat the sponges with diluted bleach to prevent mold growth, and then rinse them thoroughly with water. Sponges can be used whole or cut into pieces. For larger seeds, create small grooves or round holes. After that, soak the sponges and place them in a shallow tray.

Seeds are pressed into the sponges or special holes are cut for each seed. Cover the tray with plastic wrap and place it in a warm location. Periodically check the "greenhouse" for mold – the sponges should remain moist but not overly wet. For watering, it is better to use a spray bottle or a misting system.
