The West has long pursued an "opaque policy," providing Ukraine with false promises regarding NATO membership. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with international media following his participation in the Davos Forum.
"These were just empty words – 'Yes, Ukraine will be in NATO.' But a decade has passed, and it still hasn't happened. This was unfair to Ukraine and Ukrainians," Zelensky noted.
The President emphasized that not only Western leaders but also Ukrainian authorities misled the people in the past by promising a swift entry for the country into NATO.
He also criticized the positions of Germany and the United States regarding Ukraine, labeling them as "weak" due to their dialogue with Russia, which, according to Zelensky, Berlin and Washington have "lost."
"They lost because they always refer to agreements made with the Russians in the past. I have a question as a Ukrainian: why did you suddenly negotiate about us without us? We are an independent country. Why did you negotiate back in the 1990s, in the 2000s, and continue to do so? Why have you constantly negotiated about us without Ukraine? What security guarantees should we have?" Zelensky stated.
The President characterized this practice as "unjust and dishonest."
He pointed out that he seeks to achieve respect for Ukraine on the international stage.
"We are fighting for our rights, for the preservation of our sovereignty, and we aspire to become part of NATO. Most NATO countries support us," the head of state added.
At the same time, he named four countries that do not share Ukraine's aspiration to join the Alliance. Specifically, these are the USA, Germany, Slovakia, and Hungary.
"However, all these countries are guided by the position of the United States and the American president. If Donald Trump supports Ukraine's NATO membership, we will be in NATO. Then everyone will agree," Zelensky concluded.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the day before that ending the war between Russia and Ukraine will become the official policy of the United States under Trump. According to Rubio, both sides, Moscow and Kyiv, will be forced to make concessions to reach an agreement that guarantees long-term peace and security for Ukraine and other European partners of Washington.
Background. Recall that today, on the second day of his presidency, Trump threatened to expel Russia from the global economy if Putin does not end the war. He threatens Moscow and its allies with sanctions and tariffs if they do not stop the war.
