US President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, announced his intention to reach out to Saudi Arabia and OPEC with a request to lower oil prices.
Trump addressed the audience via video link, and the broadcast can be viewed at this link.
He also expressed hope that a reduction in oil prices could lead to an immediate end to the war in Ukraine.
“I will ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower the price of oil. It needs to be reduced! – Trump stated during his speech in Davos. – If the price of oil falls, the war between Russia and Ukraine will end immediately! The current price is high enough to sustain this war. We need to lower the price of oil; we need to end this war.”
Despite the imposition of Western sanctions, Russia continues to generate significant revenue from selling its energy resources, including to India and China.
Currently, the price of oil stands at approximately $80 per barrel.
Trump's strategy for ending the war in Ukraine involves a combination of incentives and threats to bring the parties to the negotiating table, as reported by The Times.
Trump suggests applying pressure on Russia's main trading partners, such as China and India, as well as threatening a decrease in Russian energy revenues by increasing the export of American oil and gas.
Background. Recall that the day before, Trump posted a message on social media with his first public address to Putin. Trump threatened to expel Russia from the global economy if Putin does not end the war. In particular, Trump warns Moscow and its allies of sanctions and tariffs if they do not cease hostilities.
