The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed the opinion that the mobilization law can be adjusted if it lacks public support. He stated this in an interview with "Ukrainian Radio" published on November 16.
In response to journalists' questions regarding the evaluation of the updated mobilization law, which has been in effect for half a year, Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that "in reality, everything is somewhat different." According to the president, he assesses the mobilization law "in various ways," as it has "different aspects."
"There are rules to follow the law, and that's correct, but if certain legislative norms are not supported by society, primarily by military representatives, then some things need to be slightly adjusted. Overall, according to the reports from the Commander-in-Chief, the Chief of General Staff, and the Minister of Defense, who report on mobilization at the meeting, there are certain issues they need to resolve, and there are some things that are proceeding as planned," the president stated.
Volodymyr Zelensky noted that he disagrees with the planned number of mobilized individuals previously announced by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Lytvynenko. Recall that on October 29, Lytvynenko declared that currently, 1 million 50 thousand citizens have been mobilized into the Defense Forces, and it is expected that over 160 thousand more will be mobilized.
"If I speak frankly about how many have been mobilized after this law… Do I know? Yes. Is it enough? No. Because the most important thing is people, so it is very desirable to approach such steps wisely. Therefore, if there is a shortage, then no half a million have been mobilized. To state an exact figure – I believe that is simply incorrect. So I am surprised by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council; I was not aware that he disseminates information about what has happened and what will happen," Volodymyr Zelensky said.
However, the president did not specify exactly how many people have been mobilized.
It is worth noting that the new mobilization law came into effect on May 18, 2024. According to it, Ukraine aims to regulate the accounting of conscripts, leaves for mobilized individuals, as well as changing the rules for reservation and deferment.
