Starting from April 10, the biographical drama "Oxygen Station" will be released in Ukrainian cinemas.
The story is based on a significant fragment of the biography of Mustafa Dzhemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, during a time when he faced the greatest challenges and threats to his life, while simultaneously nurturing the seeds of hope for fragile happiness in conditions of total oppression.
In 1980, in the USSR, Mustafa Dzhemilev, a long-term political prisoner, is exiled to the village of Zyryanka in Soviet Yakutia. Here, he works at an oxygen station, daily filling rusty cylinders with oxygen. His monotonous daily labor resembles the fate of the mythological Sisyphus.
The film is directed by Ivan Tymchenko, with the screenplay written by Mykhailo Brynykh. The leading roles are played by Borys Orlov, Khrystyna Deilyk, Viktor Poltoratskyi, Vasyl Kukharskyi, Edem Ibadullayev, and Vyacheslav Zhila. The film is distributed in Ukraine by B&H Film Distribution.
“The absurd labor of Sisyphus is one of the key metaphors of Western culture. However, the film "Oxygen Station" offers a different perspective on this image. Here, Sisyphus is a Soviet dissident who continues to fight in a hopeless situation and, despite all repressive efforts, does not lose his perseverance, motivation, and faith in his people. Just a few years after the events depicted in the film, the Soviet Union will collapse. The Crimean Tatar people will seemingly have a chance to finally return home. Yet the empire will continue to resist; its bloodthirsty nature and desire to destroy and enslave entire nations remain unchanged to this day. Therefore, the example of Mustafa Dzhemilev remains relevant even now: the struggle must continue until victory, even when victory seems impossible,” shared Ivan Tymchenko, the film's director.

"Oxygen Station" is not only the central location of the film but also an important symbol. In the Soviet "prison of nations," where there is no freedom or choice, the life of the main character entirely depends on other submissive "cogs of the system." At the same time, Mustafa becomes the one who fills his people with "oxygen" – hope and faith in justice.
The world premiere of the film took place within the competitive program of the "Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2023." The film received a special jury award for best directing in the national competition program, as well as the award for best song for the film from "Radio Silpo" and Mastercard at the Odessa International Film Festival in 2024.
