In the coming days, the Office of the President of Ukraine will propose changes to the legislation regarding the conscription of men aged 18 to 25 years.

According to a comment made to TCN.ua, adviser to the Department of National Security and Defense of the Office of the President, Mykola Shchur, reported this.

“A whole range of amendments will be made to both the legislation and presidential decrees. Various levels of changes to the documents are expected. I think there will be a presentation in the coming days. Currently, the 'technical details' are being coordinated,” he noted.

Shchur stated that the concept was developed by a working group consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and public organizations. The proposals may be considered at the meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.

Shchur emphasized that this concerns a voluntary contract for men who are not subject to mobilization due to their age.

It is worth recalling that under the legislation, Ukraine can mobilize military personnel aged 25–60 years who have been deemed fit for service based on their health. Meanwhile, some men under 25 may be mobilized on legal grounds (for instance, if they have completed mandatory service during peacetime, graduated from a higher military educational institution, or a military department) or at their own request.

Background. Earlier, Mind reported that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky opposed lowering the mobilization age from 25 to 18 years, as called for by the United States.
