Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine apprehended a resident of Odessa who was gathering intelligence on the basing points and routes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine's ships near the Port of Odessa. This was reported on Sunday, February 2, by the press center of the agency.
It is noted that Russian special services recruited a 37-year-old unemployed man from Odessa via Telegram. To collect intelligence, the traitor traveled along the Odessa coastline by car, covertly taking photos and recording geolocations of military sites.
The information gathered was transmitted by the agent to his Russian handler through a messenger. The Russians intended to use this data for planning combat operations at sea using cruise missiles and kamikaze drones. The Odessa resident was also tasked with identifying the firing positions of anti-aircraft missile systems and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces to direct enemy weaponry to bypass Ukrainian air defense, law enforcement officials say.
Employees of the SBU detained the perpetrator at his home. During the searches, they discovered a mobile phone and a computer used for communication with the Russian FSB.
The suspect was charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). He is being held in custody without the right to bail. The 37-year-old resident of Odessa faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Law enforcement also identified the identity and personal details of the enemy handler with whom the 37-year-old man collaborated.
