The largest private energy company in Ukraine, DTEK, has received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the United States. The gas carrier Gaslog Savannah arrived in Greece from Louisiana on the morning of Friday, December 27, the Ukrainian energy company reported.
It is noted that the first shipment of liquefied gas, amounting to approximately 100 million m3 of gas (equivalent to 1 TWh of energy), has arrived at the Greek terminal Revithoussa LNG. DTEK's pan-European trading subsidiary purchased the entire cargo.
The liquefied natural gas that has been acquired is expected to undergo regasification, after which it will be transported through the gas networks of the European Union to Ukraine.
The company emphasizes that the LNG shipment arrived just a few days before Ukraine ceased the agreement for the transportation of Russian gas to the European Union through its territory.
“Such shipments not only provide the region with a flexible and secure energy source, but also further undermine Russia's influence on our energy system,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
DTEK anticipates the continuation of such supplies from the United States and plans to expand its activities in the LNG sector to Northern Europe and the Baltic region.
It is worth noting that the contract for the transit of Russian gas to EU countries via Ukraine will expire on January 1, 2025. In August, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the agreement would not be extended. In response, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Bratislava would not supply electricity to Ukraine or find other methods of influence. Hungary holds a similar position.
