Therefore, the main focus is on Europe, Ukraine, and the primary goal is to contain Russia and expand NATO, which explains the US policy.
“This is the last war of the 20th century; these are the final attempts to conclude the Cold War. Russia wants to rectify the outcomes of the Cold War because they won World War II, just like the Americans, but then lost in 1991. Therefore, they need to balance the situation, with no NATO expansion and no Ukraine in NATO,” explains Vadim Karasev.
In general, the expert states that for Trump, the main interests lie in the Arctic, the Pacific Ocean, and Latin America, as that is where migrants, drug trafficking, and all sorts of issues originate. He will not be overly concerned about Europe, and Russia does not hold much interest for him.
“Yes, it interests him only as a player in the world, as a country that aspires to the status of a great power or is already a great power; those are the nuances. And Trump is interested in seeing Russia weaken enough for China to benefit from it. That's all. Now we need to think about how to navigate this new world of Trump, what our international positioning should be, and what our domestic policy should look like,” concludes Vadim Karasev.
