In Sumy, a military serviceman assaulted a 40-year-old man on the grounds of the local Military Recruitment Center, resulting in the victim's death from injuries sustained in the hospital. The conflict between the two men was confirmed by the press services of the Sumy police and the Sumy Regional Military Recruitment Center on Thursday, January 2.
According to the Military Recruitment Center's press service, the incident occurred on the eve of the New Year at the premises of the recruitment center. However, the Military Recruitment Center stated that the two men involved in the altercation are not employees of the center.
The Sumy regional police press service reported that one of the men was a serviceman, and a "sudden conflict" arose between him and the 40-year-old local resident.
"During the height of the argument, the serviceman lost control and inflicted bodily harm on the man. The victim was hospitalized, but succumbed to his injuries in the hospital,” the police press service stated.
The man's partner reported the assault to law enforcement. According to her, the injured man was taken to the hospital with injuries, where he later died. The Sumy Military Recruitment Center announced that they are cooperating with the investigation.
"We urge media representatives and the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and speculative claims, to rely on official sources of information, and to disregard fakes propagated by hostile Telegram channels aimed at discrediting servicemen,” the Military Recruitment Center's press service stated.
A criminal investigation has been initiated regarding the murder. The serviceman who assaulted the man has been informed of the suspicion under Part 1 of Article 119 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (manslaughter through negligence).
