The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is aware of the detention of a Ukrainian citizen born in 1966 in Slovakia. He is accused of "threatening national security."
This was reported by the agency “Interfax-Ukraine,” citing the press service of the Ukrainian MFA.
The Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic immediately established contact with the detained individual and his family, as stated in a comment to the agency.
Consuls are providing necessary support to the Ukrainian citizen, who also has a private lawyer.
“We insist on the need for the Slovak side to respect the legal rights and interests of the Ukrainian citizen. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic has already reached out to the competent authorities in Slovakia to clarify the grounds for the detention,” the agency noted.
The MFA added that Ukrainian diplomats are keeping the case under special control.
Earlier on Thursday, the publication Dennik N reported that the police in Slovakia are deporting a Ukrainian citizen due to an alleged “threat of a coup.”
According to police president Jana Maškárová, the expulsion is to take place “as soon as possible.”
“At the moment, one person is at the office of the Border Police for foreigners, where administrative expulsion is being carried out,” Maškárová added.
The publication reports that the Slovak intelligence service SIS was supposed to release a report on the possible “coup,” which was to be discussed at a meeting of the defense and security committee, but it was deemed classified.
As reported, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, accused “emissaries from Ukraine and Georgia” of being involved in organizing mass protests against his government. Fico also blamed Ukraine for allegedly being involved in a cyberattack against a Slovak insurance company.
Background. Previously, it became known that Slovakia summoned the Ukrainian ambassador due to Zelensky's criticism of Fico's policies. The Slovak ministry expressed “strong protest” to the Ukrainian ambassador regarding statements from the Ukrainian side, but did not specify which ones.
