The Slovak police have detained a Ukrainian national for allegedly preparing a coup d'état. This was reported on Thursday, January 30, by Slovak media, including Aktuality and Dennik N.
According to the head of the Slovak police, Jana Maškárová, the detained Ukrainian is currently at the border police station, where preparations for his deportation are underway. Jana Maškárová did not disclose whether the Ukrainian could have organized the so-called coup independently. She also did not specify when the deportation is planned or if he was on an international wanted list.
Meanwhile, the head of the Slovak Committee on Internal Security, Richard Kluč, stated that he expects additional information. He also added that one person could not carry out such a crime alone. Journalists also asked Richard Kluč if deportation would be a sufficiently severe punishment if the Ukrainian's guilt is proven.
“The harshest punishment for him is to send him home, as I suspect he will be detained and sent to the army,” Richard Kluč replied.
It is worth noting that Juraj Krupa, a deputy from the opposition liberal party "Freedom and Solidarity" (SaS), claimed that the case could be fabricated. He argued that planning a coup must occur in complete secrecy and that it is beyond the capability of a single individual. He also urged Slovakia to cooperate with Ukraine if “we consider it a friendly neighboring state.”
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention of the Ukrainian in Slovakia in a comment to “Ukrinform.” The foreign affairs agency assured that it is in contact with the Ukrainian citizen and his relatives.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is aware of the detention in Slovakia on charges of 'threatening national security' of a Ukrainian citizen born in 1966. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic immediately established contact with the detained individual and his family. Consuls are providing the necessary support to our citizen, who also has a private lawyer,” quotes the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry as reported by “Ukrinform.”
Recall that in February 2024, a Ukrainian was detained in Wrocław, Poland, on suspicion of espionage regarding strategically important facilities. According to the Internal Security Agency, the Ukrainian was planning to set fire to these facilities.
