IP telephony has been banned in Russia.

In the aggressor country of Russia, the use of IP telephony and making calls through the network to landline and mobile phone numbers has been prohibited.

This is stated in a decree published on the website of the Russian government.

Relevant services have been removed from the list of licensed activities. Officials explain this as part of the fight against crime.

“Such technologies were most often used by scammers, as they allowed for number substitution. Now, this type of telephone fraud will be significantly limited, as it will prevent the connection of data transmission networks to communication telephone networks,” the Russian government explained.

They claim that the restrictions will not affect ordinary users of telephone services. The ban does not apply to calls from messenger to messenger.
