A giant statue of the Virgin Mary has begun installation near Toruń. The statue will stand over 55 meters tall, making it taller than the famous Christ the King statue in Świebodzin and even the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
In the village of Konotopa in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, construction has started on a massive statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue will reach a height of over 55 meters, consisting of a 15-meter base shaped like a crown and a statue of the Virgin Mary that exceeds 40 meters. The initiative and funding for the monument come from one of Poland's wealthiest individuals, billionaire Roman Karkosik, owner of the Boryszew company, along with his wife, as reported by the local website Wirtualny Toruń.
In an interview with Wirtualny Toruń, the entrepreneur explained that the monument is intended to be not only a symbol of gratitude but also a tourist attraction. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Local media remind us that the location of the Virgin Mary statue in Konotopa is not coincidental. The statue will be erected in the municipality where the billionaire resides. Nearby, there is also an active Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, which houses a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary that has attracted pilgrims from surrounding villages for years.
If all goes according to plan, the statue of the Blessed Mother will surpass the famous Christ the King statue in Świebodzin, which stands 52.5 meters tall including its mound. Thus, the statue in Konotopa will also exceed the world-renowned Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, which is 38.5 meters tall including its pedestal.
74-year-old Roman Karkosik is one of the richest Poles, with an estimated fortune of 3.06 billion zlotys. Karkosik is an entrepreneur and investor in the stock market, owning the Alchemia metallurgical group, the Boryszew financial group, and the largest Polish manufacturer of flat aluminum products, Impexmetal.
It is worth noting that in 2017, a 12-meter concrete statue of Jesus Christ, a replica of the "Christ the Redeemer" in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, was erected in the resort town of Truskavets in Lviv Oblast.
