Instructors in Germany have borrowed Soviet tanks from museums and dug trenches according to Russian standards to make the training of Ukrainian soldiers more realistic. This was reported on November 11 by Reuters citing the commander of the EU training mission for Ukraine, German Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow.

According to him, as of November, instructors from 17 countries in Germany have already trained about 18,000 Ukrainian soldiers. The mission specifically trains snipers, engineers, and medics.

To create conditions as close to real combat as possible for the Ukrainians, instructors have borrowed Soviet tanks from museums and dug trench systems based on Russian standards.

The Soviet equipment is used on the so-called Russian side, but Marlow declined to specify where exactly it was obtained.

During training, small traps are set in abandoned equipment to demonstrate where soldiers need to be cautious,” he added.

EU Training Mission for Ukrainian Soldiers

On Monday, October 14, the foreign ministers of EU member states decided to extend the EU Training Mission (EUMAM) for Ukrainian soldiers. The mission was established back in October 2022. Within its framework, European countries conduct training for Ukrainian soldiers, primarily in Poland and Germany.

In May, Spain also agreed to host training for an additional 400 Ukrainian servicemen. By that time, 4,000 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had already undergone training there.
