Quarantine measures have been implemented in several localities of the Sheptytskyi district due to an outbreak of avian influenza. This includes the villages of Bendiuhy and Vols’vyn. The decision was made after at least 30 dead swans were discovered in the Western Bug River near the city of Sheptytskyi. This was reported on Friday, January 31, by the head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi.

“Dead swans were recorded in the floodplains of the Western Bug between the villages of Vols’vyn, Bendiuhy, and the city of Sheptytskyi. Two birds were sampled for biological material testing. One of them tested positive for RNA-containing influenza virus,” wrote Kozytskyi.

The State Emergency Anti-Epidemic Commission at the Sheptytskyi District Administration has decided to impose quarantine in the coastal area of the floodplains of the Western Bug River. The threatening zone has been established within a three-kilometer radius, which includes the villages of Bendiuhy and Vols’vyn. The restrictions will last for approximately three weeks.

During this period, specialists will monitor poultry both on farms and in private households within a zone of at least 10 kilometers. They will visit yards to identify any dead birds and conduct informational outreach among the population regarding avian influenza prevention. Additionally, there is a ban on the movement of birds, trading in poultry products, and holding fairs and other events.

Avian influenza is a viral disease that can affect birds, humans, and some animals. Migratory birds are often carriers of the virus.
Contact with sick or dead birds can be dangerous.

How to protect yourself:

  • avoid contact with wild or domestic birds unless necessary;
  • if you do touch a bird, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and take a shower;
  • if you find a dead bird, do not touch it, and do not attempt to bury or move it yourself;
  • report any cases of illness or death of birds to the veterinary service or local administration.
