The Turkish Minister of Energy, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced that Ankara is prepared to begin supplying electricity to Syria and Lebanon.

According to Reuters,

“Initially, the electricity required by Syria and Lebanon may be met through exports from Turkey, and of course, we will be able to get a clearer picture after we assess the situation in the power grid,” Bayraktar emphasized to journalists.

The Minister noted that the pre-war capacity of Syria's power grid was around 8,500 megawatts, but it has now fallen to approximately 3,500 megawatts.

“The overwhelming majority of people are meeting their electricity needs through generators, so there is indeed a very serious demand for electricity,” Bayraktar explained.

According to him, a Turkish delegation is already in Syria, where they were set to discuss potential energy cooperation, including the transfer of electricity to alleviate the deficit.

Reuters pointed out that Turkey, which supported rebels in neighboring Syria that overthrew Bashar al-Assad after 13 years of civil war, has reopened its embassy in Damascus and has already held high-level contacts with the new de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
