Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his support for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to call Putin.
He made this statement at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, as reported by Bloomberg.
According to him, it would be beneficial to maintain an open line of communication with Putin. He noted that ending the violence in Ukraine "requires a certain level of interaction with partners, with whom in many cases we disagree." Trudeau quickly added that Canada and its allies continue to work closely with Zelensky. "It's good that conversations are happening around this, but my level of trust in Vladimir Putin is probably at its lowest ever," said the Canadian Prime Minister.
He further stated that Canada is committed to Ukraine's victory and desires an end to the conflict as soon as possible. "There may be times when this could happen in the coming months," the politician remarked, without providing further details.
Trudeau emphasized that ending the conflict on Ukraine's terms will require support from the U.S. during Donald Trump's administration. "Let’s also be very frank: no ally in the world can replace the complete withdrawal of support for Ukraine from the United States," the politician stated.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Scholz called Putin for the first time since December 2022. Zelensky described this conversation as “a Pandora's box”, after which there could be "other conversations, other calls." At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk welcomed the content of the dialogue between the German Chancellor and the Russian dictator.
