Three nuclear power plants in Ukraine have reduced their electricity production following new attacks by Russia on the country's energy infrastructure, which have jeopardized nuclear safety during the war.
This was stated by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.
“For the second time in less than two weeks, the Khmelnytsky, Rivne, and South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants have lowered their power levels as a precaution during the ongoing large-scale military actions in the country,” he noted.
It is also reported that power levels were reduced at nine reactors operating at these plants. Additionally, one reactor at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected from the grid.
According to the report, the nuclear power plants continued to receive electricity from external sources despite the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant losing connection with two power transmission lines.
“The energy infrastructure of Ukraine is extremely fragile and vulnerable, putting nuclear safety at significant risk. I once again urge maximum military restraint in areas where key nuclear energy facilities and other dependent sites are located,” Grossi emphasized.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Russia conducted a massive missile attack on Ukrainian energy facilities. Explosions were heard in various regions, with reports of hits in Volyn, Sumy, and Kharkiv.
