The decree will prohibit granting citizenship to newborns if their parents are not U.S. citizens.
Трамп подписал указ о лишении гражданства США по праву рождения – 22 штата уже пытаются его остановить.

In the United States, 22 states and human rights organizations have filed a series of lawsuits to block President Donald Trump's executive order, which revokes birthright citizenship for those born on U.S. soil.

Reuters reports on the matter.

Following his inauguration on January 20, Trump ordered government agencies to deny citizenship recognition to children born in the United States if their mother or father is not a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

The 22 states, governed by Democrats, along with the District of Columbia and the city of San Francisco, have filed lawsuits in federal courts in Boston and Seattle, claiming that Trump is violating the Constitution.

Two similar lawsuits were filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, immigrant organizations, and a pregnant woman just hours after Trump signed the executive order.

According to the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, any person born in the United States is considered a citizen.

If Trump's order remains in effect, it would strip over 150,000 children born annually in the U.S. of their right to a U.S. passport, according to a representative of the Massachusetts Attorney General.

It is worth noting that the U.S. is one of the few countries in the world with such a law. It is often utilized by families seeking to quickly obtain U.S. citizenship. In this scenario, a pregnant woman first travels to the United States, gives birth to one child here, then a second, and so on. She eventually acquires citizenship as the mother of U.S. citizens. Later, her husband also obtains citizenship. This scheme has even coined the term: anchor babies.

Background. Recall that Trump was one of the first to sign an order on January 20 to halt all foreign aid programs for 90 days. Experts explain that this order does not affect military aid to Ukraine.
