Trump has named Pam Bondi as the new candidate for Attorney General after Gaetz withdrew his nomination.

Elected U.S. President Donald Trump has named former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as the new candidate for the position of U.S. Attorney General.

This was reported by CNN.

Trump announced this in a social media post just hours after former Congressman Matt Gaetz declined the offer.

"For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has weaponized against me and other Republicans – no more," Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social. "Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on its true purpose – fighting crime and restoring safety in America. I have known Pam for many years – she is smart and resilient, and she will be THE FIGHTER FOR AMERICA who will do a fantastic job as Attorney General!"

Gaetz withdrew from consideration for the Attorney General position after Trump informed him that he did not have the votes in the Senate.

Gaetz's chances for Senate confirmation quickly diminished amid increasing pressure from lawmakers, including some Republicans, in light of an impending report from the House Ethics Committee regarding him.

The report, which has not yet been made public by the committee, details the commission's investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and other potential crimes by Gaetz, including reports of sexual activity with a minor in 2017 and the use of prohibited substances. He has not been charged with any crime at this time.

"Trump's allies breathed a sigh of relief," CNN reports on Trump's selection of a new candidate.

"She is certainly qualified for the position. She has dedicated her life to handling criminal cases. She has a resume, unlike the previous candidate," said David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor in Florida who now works as an attorney at Jones Walker.

Pam Bondi served as Florida's Attorney General from 2011 to 2019. She was also part of Trump's legal team during his first impeachment, when he was accused of pressuring Ukraine to initiate an investigation into the corruption of his opponent, current President Joe Biden, by withholding military aid.

Recently, Pam Bondi has led the legal division of the America First Policy Institute – a right-leaning think tank that closely collaborated with Trump's campaign, helping to shape policy for his future administration.
