Norwegian biathlete Tarjei Boe has announced his retirement at the end of the 2024/25 season. He declared this after winning the sprint at the sixth stage of the World Cup in Antholz.
As a result, Boe will not compete in the 2026 Olympic Games, nor will his brother Johannes. The current holder of the Big Crystal Globe announced his retirement at the previous stage in Ruhpolding.
“Many people talk about the Olympics, but during the winter I felt that it was the right time to end my career. I promised myself that the next time I am at the top, I would say that I’m leaving. So that’s how it turned out,” added Tarjei.
The farewell races for the 36-year-old athlete will take place at his home stadium in Holmenkollen, where the final stage of the World Cup will be held from March 21-23.
For reference, Tarjei is a 6-time Olympic medalist (he became a champion in relay races in 2010 and twice in 2022, and also won silver in the sprint and bronze in the pursuit race at Beijing 2022). Boe is an 11-time world champion in biathlon, having won gold in individual races twice – in the "individual" event in 2011 and in the mass start in 2013.
Tarjei has 44 victories in World Cup biathlon races, two of which were in the 2024/25 season. In the 2010/11 season, the Norwegian biathlete won the Big Crystal Globe. Additionally, the athlete has five Small Crystal Globes to his credit.
