The court sentenced an 81-year-old crossover driver for a fatal accident at a crosswalk in Lviv.

According to the case materials, on the evening of August 24, around 7:30 PM, Volodymyr Dragan, driving a Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, struck a man and a woman who were crossing the road at a regulated pedestrian crossing while the traffic light was green for pedestrians. As a result of the collision, the 70-year-old pedestrian died at the scene, while the 51-year-old female pedestrian was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The Ivano-Frankivsk District Court of Lviv has issued a verdict against 81-year-old Lviv resident Volodymyr Dragan, who, while driving a Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, struck two pedestrians at a regulated crosswalk on Naukovyi Street in Lviv in August of this year. As a result of the incident, one pedestrian died, while the other was hospitalized with injuries. The offender received a suspended sentence.

According to case materials, on the evening of August 24 at approximately 7:30 PM, Volodymyr Dragan, driving his Volkswagen Tiguan, struck a man and a woman who were crossing the road within a regulated crosswalk at a green traffic light. As a result of the collision, the 70-year-old pedestrian died at the scene, while the 51-year-old female pedestrian was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

The accused admitted his guilt and expressed remorse; he entered into a plea agreement with the prosecutor acknowledging his culpability. Additionally, the offender compensated the victims for the damages incurred.

Judge Bohdana Kushnir approved the aforementioned plea agreement. By the court's ruling, Volodymyr Dragan was found guilty of violating traffic safety rules that resulted in the death of the victim (part 2, Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and was sentenced to five years of imprisonment, along with a two-year ban on driving vehicles. At the same time, the offender was released from the main punishment, with a two-year probation period established. An appeal can still be filed against the verdict.
