U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has dismissed the criminal case against Donald Trump concerning interference in the elections following his victory in the presidential race.

This was reported by The Hill.

The judge granted the request of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith to close the case. It is noted that the U.S. Constitution prohibits charges against a sitting president. However, the publication suggests that attempts to prosecute Trump may arise again after the end of his term.

Alongside this, the special prosecutor requested the withdrawal of his appeal to reinstate the criminal case against the future U.S. president. In Florida, he faced accusations of mishandling classified documents and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them. It is anticipated that the court will approve this dismissal as well.

Note. The U.S. prosecution charged Donald Trump in March 2023. He was suspected of financial fraud, storing government documents at his private residence, interference in the presidential elections, and involvement in the riots that led to the Capitol storming.

The trial lasted over a year, and in September 2024, the court announced a postponement of the verdict for Trump due to the presidential elections. The judge explained that the court is apolitical and should not influence the elections, thus the verdict was planned to be announced on November 26.

Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Trump named Pam Bondi as the new candidate for the position of U.S. Attorney General after Gaetz withdrew his candidacy. A scandal erupted in the media regarding Gaetz due to repeated allegations of sexual misconduct and relations with minors.
