According to materials from the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), with procedural guidance from the Office of the Prosecutor General, a current Member of Parliament of Ukraine has been announced as a suspect in state treason.
This was reported by the DBR press service.
The law enforcement agencies have not disclosed the name, but according to data from MP Oleksiy Honcharenko, it concerns Yevhen Shevchenko, who was expelled from the "Servant of the People" party.
A comprehensive psychological-linguistic and military examination confirmed that the deputy began to inflict harm on Ukraine's defense capability and information security even before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
In particular, in 2021, he published false information regarding the absence of a threat of a full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation from the territory of the Republic of Belarus.
"The investigation also established his contacts with representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus after he entered the parliament's tribune in September 2020 with the flag of that country," the bureau's statement reads.
It is noted that the deputy recorded programs on his own channels, gave interviews to pro-Russian bloggers and experts. Subsequently, this content was disseminated through propaganda media in the territory of the Russian Federation to create a public stance in the aggressor country that this is the official position of a representative of the Ukrainian government.
"In these programs, the deputy spread information that solidified the notion in public consciousness that the Ukrainian authorities had allegedly led the country to complete collapse, loss of territory and people, and were incapable of achieving peace. The MP also propagated the idea that Ukraine was no longer able to win and should negotiate with Russia on any terms," the message states.
Furthermore, according to the DBR, the MP also disseminated information aimed at discrediting Western partners and European values. In particular, he claimed that the West was interfering not only in Ukraine's internal affairs and causing war in the country but also attempting to undermine stability in Georgia and Moldova through election influence.
According to the investigation, under the protection of the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, the deputy and his close relatives conducted active business with representatives of that country, including in the electricity and fertilizer markets. By purchasing goods there at undervalued prices, they imported them into Ukraine through another European country and sold them at much higher prices.
"The 'facilitation regime' from the Belarusian authorities allowed the deputy to earn 1.5 million euros in net profit in six months. At the same time, he managed to transfer only 500,000 euros to Ukraine. The rest could not be obtained due to the blocking of dubious transactions by the financial monitoring of one of the European banks," the bureau clarified.
Moreover, it has been recorded that during this time, the deputy purchased and registered three luxury cars valued at a total of $500,000 in the names of relatives.
Shevchenko is suspected of committing state treason under the signs of a criminal offense stipulated in part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 15 years with confiscation of property.
"The court will be asked to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention," the DBR added.
