In Zaporizhzhia, police prevented the kidnapping of a local resident. The victim was targeted for abduction and torture to extract access to his cryptocurrency wallet, which allegedly contained $500,000. This was reported on Saturday, February 1, by the press service of the National Police.
According to law enforcement, the masterminds behind the crime were a father and son who, while living in Croatia, ordered the abduction of their relative – another son in Zaporizhzhia. The latter was involved in cryptocurrency and had conflicts with family members over "financial discrepancies." The father and older son found a local resident who would help them abduct their relative.
The police, who received information about the planned kidnapping, secretly recruited a hired criminal to assist.
“To save the victim's life, operatives from the Department of Strategic Investigations and police investigators staged his abduction. They then sent the older brother confirming evidence – bloody photos of the victim. In turn, the father began calling his ex-wife with a proposal to help free their child, but under one condition – they had to hand over a flash drive with access to the cryptocurrency wallet and transfer money to the criminals for the release,” the report states.
After receiving photographic evidence, the perpetrators transferred a second installment to the fictitious kidnapper for the completed work, the police noted.
Currently, the issue of notifying the father and older son of their absence of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (extortion) is being resolved. Materials are also being prepared to issue a wanted notice for them. They face up to 12 years in prison with asset confiscation for their actions.
As reported by ZAXID.NET, on January 31, the SBU detained a deputy of the Poltava Regional Council on suspicion of ordering the murder of a local agricultural company owner. For this, the deputy enlisted his driver and promised him $20,000 for the job.
