The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine has neutralized yet another attempt by Russia to carry out sabotage on the Ukrainian railway. The SBU detained an FSB agent who was trying to blow up a railway track in the Rivne region ahead of a freight train. This was reported on Monday, February 3, by the Security Service of Ukraine.

The suspect attempted to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) under the railway track in Rivne, which is used for freight transport. The Russians planned to remotely activate the explosives while the train was in motion, thus disrupting the supply of military aid to the front line. However, the suspect did not even manage to set up the IED, as the SBU apprehended him at the scene.

According to the case materials, the agent was a 23-year-old unemployed resident of the Lviv region, who had previously been held accountable for vandalism at the burial sites of Ukrainian soldiers. He came to the attention of the FSB as an ideological supporter of the Russians, who did not wish to relocate to Russia, as he repeatedly stated on social media.

The investigation revealed that the agent received step-by-step instructions from his Russian handlers: to arrive in Rivne, retrieve explosives from a cache, and install them at specified coordinates on the tracks. Law enforcement also gathered evidence that the detainee was carrying out another task – he was collecting information about the locations of Defense Forces units in the Lviv region.

SBU investigators informed the detainee of his suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2 of Article 111 (treason committed under martial law) and Part 2 of Article 113 (sabotage committed under martial law). The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
