Firstly, the expert explains, there is no agreement yet; it is only being planned, and it will not concern peace. Instead, it will be a ceasefire agreement, which, as everyone understands, is merely a temporary measure because the ultimate goal is to reclaim the occupied territories, and to achieve this, Russia must be deprived of funds.
“And at that moment, should we start buying gas again under this agreement? You imposed sanctions and refused gas, let's start with the basics: this is because Russia invaded Ukraine. So, as long as Russia does not completely withdraw from Ukraine, nothing should be resumed with them,” asserts Mikhail Sheitelman.
Even Merkel, he notes, whom we criticize for her friendship with Putin, stated that sanctions were imposed due to the occupation of Crimea and would be lifted when Crimea is liberated. Furthermore, the expert reminds us, Russia attacked again, and Europe imposed new sanctions for the occupation of other Ukrainian territories. Therefore, you can lift them if you wish, but only when the Russians return home; otherwise, it would be aiding the enemy.
“Proponents of the idea believe that purchasing Russian gas will lower high energy prices in Europe and encourage the Russian authorities to come to the negotiating table. So, you see, this will help... Should we all buy gas from them, and they will sit down for negotiations? You bought it - they started a war. Consequently, if you buy gas again, they will start a war again. It’s simple, arithmetic; what more is there to discuss?” states Mikhail Sheitelman.
