The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, left the presidential palace on the day of the inauguration of the newly elected president, Mikheil Kavelashvili. Zourabichvili stated that she is leaving the palace, taking with her legitimacy and the flag, as reported by SOVA and “Echo of the Caucasus” on Sunday, December 29.
“This building belongs to no one. This building was a symbol while there was a legitimate president here. Along with me, I take legitimacy, I take the flag, I take your trust,” Zourabichvili said.
According to her, the inauguration of the new president, Mikheil Kavelashvili, is a “parody.” And Georgia does not deserve such parodies.
Zourabichvili explained that she is leaving the presidential palace because Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling party “Georgian Dream,” and other officials did not meet with her for a week to jointly find a solution to the crisis and schedule new parliamentary elections in Georgia.
The fifth president stated that she, along with the opposition, will resolve the issue of holding early parliamentary elections. She also emphasized the need to protect free media and release all detained participants of anti-government protests in the country.
Furthermore, Salome Zourabichvili assured that she will remain with the Georgian people until elections are scheduled and new leadership is elected. The fifth president plans to meet with citizens, businesses, government officials, and hold meetings abroad.
It is worth noting that on December 29, the inauguration of the new president Mikheil Kavelashvili took place in the building of the Parliament of Georgia, whom Salome Zourabichvili, the opposition, and Georgia’s international partners do not recognize. The former football player Kavelashvili was elected by the Electoral College, the majority of which consisted of members of the ruling “Georgian Dream.” Protesters gathered at the parliament building on December 29 and showed red cards to the new president.
