In December, the Russian army experienced record personnel losses since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported this on social media platform X, citing intelligence data.

“December 2024 has likely become the 'costliest' month of the war for Russia, with total losses amounting to 48,670 personnel. In November 2024, Russian losses were recorded at 45,680. December marks the sixth consecutive month in which Russian forces have seen an increase in monthly losses,” the statement said.

According to the ministry, Russian daily losses also reached a new monthly peak in December. It was noted that the average daily losses stood at 1,570 personnel—marking the fifth consecutive month in which Russian forces have set a new record for average daily losses.

The ministry stated that on December 19, Russian forces lost 2,200 soldiers in a single day, a record for the country since the war began.

"Russia is likely to continue experiencing high military losses in January 2025 as it continues infantry assaults across various sections of the front," the ministry clarified.
