The Ukrainian project DeepState, in its latest update of the front line map, reports that Russian forces have taken control of the remaining residential areas of the city of Kurakhove in the Donetsk region and have entered the industrial zone in the western part of the city.
On the updated map as of the evening of January 1, DeepState highlights the advancement of Russian troops in three main directions of their attacks: to the southwest of Pokrovsk, to the southwest and west of Velyka Novosilka, as well as in Kurakhove and its outskirts.
In Kurakhove, according to DeepState, Russian units have already entered the industrial zone near the Kurakhivska Thermal Power Plant, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), according to Ukrainian military bloggers, had previously set up a fortified area.
Russian military Telegram channels reported that the Russians raised their flag over the Kurakhivska TPP in the eastern part of the industrial zone before the New Year.
Fighting in Kurakhove has been ongoing for two months, since early November.
Ukrainian military blogger Bohdan Miroshnykov claimed on the evening of January 1 that battles for the remnants of the private sector in Kurakhove were still underway, and that only reconnaissance and sabotage groups of Russians were entering the territory of the power plant, although these claims contradict DeepState's data.
Background. It is worth noting that the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on December 27 that Russian forces had likely captured the city of Kurakhove after two months of intense offensive operations.
