Directed by Maria Stoyanova, in theaters from January 9
The film received significant awards at the 21st International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival Docudays UA: the main award in the Docu/Ukraine competition, a special mention in the Docu/World competition, the main award from the student jury, and recognition from the jury of the Union of Film Critics of Ukraine.
This film is a delicate, hypnotic journey through the video archive of the Ukrainian ice ballet ensemble, which toured abroad in the 80s and 90s. Using these cassette recordings, the director's daughter reconstructs an extraordinary story of growing up: her own, her family's, and society in Ukraine.
The film is edited from the home archives of director Maria Stoyanova, for whom “Ice Fragments” marks her feature debut after creating short archival films. The cinematographer of the film is the director's father, Mykhailo Stoyanov.
Babygirl, directed by Galina Rajs, in theaters from January 16
The world premiere of the film took place at this year's Venice Film Festival. For her role in this film, 57-year-old Nicole Kidman won the award for Best Actress.
She plays Romi, an authoritarian leader of an international corporation who embarks on a romance with her intern Samuel. Their relationship violates corporate ethics, and the young man is significantly younger than the long-married protagonist. However, they cannot resist their passion and together explore issues of sexuality, power, and domination in the modern corporate culture.
Besides Kidman, the film features Harris Dickinson (“Triangle of Sadness,” “The Witch”), Sophie Wilde (“Talk to Me”), and Antonio Banderas (“The Skin I Live In”).
The film is directed by Dutch filmmaker, actress, and writer Galina Rajs.
Saint-Ex, directed by Pablo Aguero, in theaters from January 23
The events of the film take place in 1930 in Argentina. During this period, Saint-Exupéry was a pilot for the French airmail service. Along with his colleague Henri Guillaumet, they planned to establish a shorter air route over the mountains. However, Guillaumet's reconnaissance flight ends badly: he goes missing. Saint-Exupéry embarks on a perilous night flight to find his friend. This trial, filled with deadly risks, becomes a turning point for him, reshaping his worldview and inspiring the creation of “The Little Prince.”
The lead role in the film is played by Louis Garrel (“The Dreamers,” “The Young Godard,” “The Three Musketeers”). The film also features Diane Kruger (“Troy,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “The Infiltrator”), Vincent Cassel (“Doberman,” “The Three Musketeers”), Benoît Magimel (“The Pianist,” “The Taste of Things”), and others.
The director is Pablo Aguero (“Eva Doesn’t Sleep,” “The Man's Son”), who won the Cannes Film Festival award for his short film “First Snow” in 2006.
