The new film by Robert Eggers, "Nosferatu," has hit theaters. This gothic tale explores the obsession between a young woman haunted by ghosts and a terrifying vampire who falls in love with her, inducing unfathomable horror.

Ellen Gatter, the woman obsessed by Nosferatu, is portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp, while Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas Gatter, Ellen's husband. The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, and Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhardt von Franz. The lead role is played by Bill Skarsgård.

This film serves as a sort of remake of the classic "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." It is a silent film directed by German filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, made in 1921 and released in 1922. Murnau initially intended to adapt Bram Stoker's "Dracula," but the Prana Film studio was unable to acquire the rights to the novel. To continue working on the film, Murnau changed the names of the main characters and altered the plot somewhat.

In 1979, Werner Herzog directed another film about Nosferatu, starring Klaus Kinski in the lead role. In 2000, E. Elias Merhige created a film depicting Murnau's filmmaking process (with John Malkovich portraying the director), while Willem Dafoe played Max Schreck, the actor who portrayed Count Orlok in the original "Nosferatu." Notably, Dafoe will also appear in Eggers' film.

The release of "Nosferatu" is undoubtedly an event worthy of a significant discussion. For now, let’s warm up by recalling some well-known vampire films.

"Bram Stoker's Dracula"

The cult classic "Bram Stoker's Dracula," directed by iconic filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola in 1992, features performances by Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, and Anthony Hopkins. Coppola did not have to change the characters' names, making this a sort of return to the source material.

Set in London at the end of the 19th century, young lawyer Jonathan Harker and the beautiful Mina are in love. Jonathan is compelled to leave and travel to meet Count Dracula, who wishes to purchase property in the capital of England. However, Jonathan is unaware of Dracula's true nature. In addition to the stunning cinematography, one can also find original costume ideas.

"Interview with the Vampire"

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, 1994, directed by Neil Jordan

This mystical drama by Neil Jordan, featuring Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst, and Tom Cruise, is based on the novel of the same name by American author Anne Rice. The plot centers around Louis, a Creole who was turned into a vampire in 1791. After two hundred years, he decides to recount his life story to a young reporter (Christian Slater).

"From Dusk Till Dawn"

This cult American action-horror-comedy from 1996, directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Kurtzman, also boasts a star-studded cast. The film features George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Salma Hayek, Danny Trejo, and others.

After a bank robbery, two brothers on the run from the police take a priest and his children hostage. Near the Mexican border, they decide to spend the night in a roadside bar.

"Dark Shadows"

Dark Shadows, 2012, directed by Tim Burton

This beautifully crafted story shines with the brilliance of director Tim Burton and his favorite actor Johnny Depp. The film is set in the 18th century. The Collins family moves from England to America in an attempt to escape a family curse. Years later, Barnabas, the son of the Collins, becomes the owner of the estate. He offends a girl, Angelique Bouchard, who turns out to be a witch. She seeks revenge, and Barnabas is transformed into a vampire sealed in a crypt. He manages to escape in 1972 and returns to his ancestral estate, which has changed significantly over the 200 years.

"What We Do in the Shadows"

What We Do in the Shadows, 2014, directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi

Directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi mimic documentary filmmaking. This mockumentary tells the story of three vampires trying to survive in modern society. They pay rent, use the internet, and frequent nightclubs. It's more humorous than scary, but definitely worth a watch. The directors also play the main roles, inviting Jonathan Brugh as the third.
