Christmas Eve, celebrated on December 24, is the eve of the Nativity of Christ and one of the most significant days in the Christian tradition. “Glavcom” shares the traditions and ancient customs that Ukrainians observe on this day.
Gather with the whole family. The evening should be spent in the company of loved ones at the same table.
Prepare 12 meatless dishes. Traditionally, the table should include dishes such as kutia, uzvar, dumplings, meatless stuffed cabbage, and bread. Each dish symbolizes the 12 apostles.
Decorate the festive table. The table is covered with fresh hay or straw, sprinkled with a bit of grain, and then covered with a tablecloth. In the corners of the table, a clove of garlic is placed under the tablecloth, which, according to folk beliefs, protects the home from evil forces and illness. Garlic also symbolizes health and purification from sins.
Light a Christmas candle. The holy evening begins with prayer and lighting the Christmas candle, after which everyone tastes kutia. Later, it is important to savor each dish.
Start dinner with the appearance of the first star. On Christmas Eve, dinner begins with the sighting of the first star, and family members must not be late for the meal.
Place a didukh in the home. Didukh is a sheaf of rye, wheat, or oats, symbolizing prosperity, good harvest, and wealth. It is placed in a prominent spot in the house and is believed to bring comfort and a festive atmosphere.
Leave an empty plate with a spoon and an empty glass on the table for family members who could not make it to the dinner.
