The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, proposed to Donald Trump to rename North America, including the United States, to "Mexican America." This was reported by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday, January 8.

The Mexican leader responded to the elected U.S. President Donald Trump's statement about renaming the Gulf of Mexico to "American Gulf." Claudia Sheinbaum showcased a map from 1607 that depicts North America as part of Mexico. The President of Mexico also joked that "Mexican America sounds sweet."

At the same time, the head of the Mexican office at the Council of Europe, Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real, noted that "Mexican America" has been recognized since the 17th century as the name for the entire northern part of the American continent, and the name "Gulf of Mexico" was acknowledged internationally hundreds of years ago.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, January 7, during a press conference, Donald Trump suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America." He also indicated that he would not rule out the use of military force to take control of Greenland or the Panama Canal during his conversation with journalists.

However, Claudia Sheinbaum expressed hope that relations between Mexico and the U.S. "will be good," explaining Trump's statements by saying that he "has his own way of communicating."

Additionally, it should be mentioned that Trump had previously expressed a desire to purchase Greenland. In light of this statement, Denmark changed its royal coat of arms, making the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands more prominent.
