Poland is commencing its six-month presidency of the European Union Council, taking over this role from Hungary.

This is mentioned on the website of the European Union Council.

Starting from January 1, 2025, Poland will assume the presidency of the EU Council on a rotational basis, which will last until July 1.

In a release regarding Poland's priorities in the EU Council, it is noted that the country is taking over the presidency "during a time of uncertainty and concern."

"Europe is grappling with the consequences of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine and the need to strengthen its own defense capabilities. We are witnessing a rise in geopolitical tension, the erosion of a rules-based international order, and hybrid attacks aimed at European democracy and security," the Polish side stated.

It is emphasized that Europe is in a "time of trials and decisions" and the EU "must protect itself and its citizens and care for its immediate neighborhood."

"The responsibility to future generations demands EU unity and readiness to work with partners who share our values, including candidate countries for membership. Moreover, it obliges us to defend the values on which the community is based, such as democracy, freedom, and the rule of law," the release declares.

Thus, Warsaw states that the Polish presidency will "support efforts to strengthen European security in all its dimensions: external, internal, informational, economic, energy, food, and health security."

There are also seven relevant "dimensions of security" mentioned:

  • defense and security;
  • protection of people and borders;
  • resilience to external interference and disinformation;
  • ensuring the security and freedom of business;
  • energy transition;
  • competitive and sustainable agriculture;
  • health security.

Reminder: The presidency of the European Union Council – the legislative body of the bloc – rotates among EU member countries for a six-month term. Poland previously held the presidency in 2011.
