Deputy Serhiy Batryn, who detonated grenades in the building of the Keretsky Village Council in Transcarpathia, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.
"Prosecutors proved in court that on December 15, 2023, in the village of Keretski, Khust district, during a session of the village council, the convicted individual carried out a terrorist act. He threw grenades on the floor, which detonated immediately," the statement reads.
It is noted that over 20 people were injured from the grenade explosions. Two village council deputies died from multiple shrapnel wounds. One of them passed away the day after the incident, while the other died a month later.
According to the investigation, the deputy had been preparing for this in advance. A few months prior, he purchased two RGД-5 fragmentation assault grenades and one F-1 hand fragmentation defensive grenade, which he kept at his residence.
"During the pre-trial investigation and court proceedings, the convicted individual was held in custody at the State Institution 'Transcarpathian Correctional Facility (No. 9)'. He will remain there until the sentence takes legal effect," the Prosecutor General's Office added.
In order to compensate for the property damage caused by the terrorist act, a civil lawsuit has been filed against the deputy by the Keretsky Village Council, the OGP noted.
