“All modern armies around the world utilize so-called Lancaster models or Markov chains and similar methods, which are all related to computer and mathematical forecasting of military operations. Military science and art are exact sciences. In other words, war is not politics; combat operations are purely scientific. They are calculated using differential equations; Lancaster models imply this, but it all depends on the source,” explains Oleg Starikov.

As he narrates, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine were preparing for the summer counteroffensive in 2023, our strategic partners input these plans into supercomputers to see the outcomes. According to various sources, the expert notes, 3 or 8 such simulations were conducted, and in all of them, Russia lost, while Ukrainian forces broke through the Surovikin line and advanced towards the Black Sea coast, towards Crimea, but in reality, things did not unfold that way.

“So, I will say that what was input (editor's note – into the supercomputers) and where the mistakes were made. They miscalculated the moral resilience of the Russian army. They thought that they would behave similarly to how they did during our autumn offensive in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions,” explains Oleg Starikov.

He recounts that even officers from the 47th assault brigade expected that the Russians would see Bradley, Abrams, and Leopard tanks with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and simply flee in fear. Thus, the expert emphasizes, one must always consider the morale and fighting spirit of the personnel.
