The Free Democratic Party is considering the possibility of voting in parliament to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles, which would allow for overcoming Chancellor Olaf Scholz's resistance.
Source. This was stated in an interview with party leader Christian Dürr by the publication Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is contemplating bringing the issue of supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles to a vote in the Bundestag, he said.
The parliamentary initiative has emerged amid Chancellor Olaf Scholz's opposition to supplying Ukraine with Taurus missiles.
FDP faction leader Christian Dürr stated that simply providing financial aid to Ukraine is insufficient when the situation becomes critical.
“We have finally proposed delivering cruise missiles Taurus to them,” he said.
“That would be possible. I can fully imagine, looking at the statements from the CDU/CSU and the Greens, that such an initiative could be successful,” he added.
The discussion arose in the context of overall tension among coalition members. Dürr mentioned that his party has already pledged to support an additional €3 billion in aid for Ukraine, but opposed the Chancellor's larger proposal of €15 billion, which he claimed included €12 billion for SPD projects.
Berlin has refused for several months to provide Ukraine with its Taurus missiles, despite requests and appeals from Ukraine to other Western allies to allow long-range strikes on Russian air bases with Western missiles.
At the end of October, Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed his position that transferring Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine is “wrong” and would provoke “escalation,” meaning a flare-up of a large-scale war.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Friedrich Merz from the CDU supported the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukrainian forces, emphasizing that such deliveries would not make Germany a party to the war.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock urged her Green Party to support military aid to Ukraine and prepare “another very large security package” for Ukraine, advocating for “long-range weapon systems,” although she did not explicitly mention Taurus missiles.
Background. Recall that the former German finance minister proposed to Scholz to provide Ukraine with "Taurus", to which the Chancellor responded by announcing his resignation – Lindner accused Scholz of obstructing “effective military support for Ukraine.”
