Germany's Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, criticized Berlin's actions regarding assistance to Ukraine.
“Germany's consistent delays in supplying weapons will remain a mistake,” the politician from the Green Party stated during an interview on ARD, as reported by the Polish publication PAP.
Habeck, a Green Party candidate for the position of federal chancellor in the upcoming German parliamentary elections (Bundestag), reminded everyone of the initial reluctance of the government to provide any weapons to Ukraine, and later, the Leopard tanks.
“This situation is repeating itself now,” Habeck emphasized, referring to the discussions about supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is reluctant to agree to the supply of Taurus ahead of the upcoming election campaign. He presents his stance as a manifestation of caution regarding the war in Ukraine and “preventing escalation.”
Minister Habeck advocates for supplying cruise missiles to the Ukrainian army. Another candidate for chancellor, opposition leader Friedrich Merz, shares the same position.
Background. It is worth noting that Olaf Scholz stated he is proud of his contribution to ensuring “that there is no escalation in Ukraine.”
