The French Foreign Minister announced that the country is prepared to deploy troops to Greenland.

Jean-Noël Barro clarified that Denmark has not yet shown interest in this idea.
Министр иностранных дел Франции заявил, что страна готова отправить войска в Гренландию.

France has discussed with Denmark the deployment of troops to Greenland in response to repeated threats from US President Donald Trump to annex Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark, stated French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

In response to questions about calls to send EU troops to Greenland, Barrot mentioned in an interview with French Sud Radio that France "has begun discussions on troop deployment with Denmark," but Denmark has not yet supported this idea, according to Politico.

Barrot's comments came at a time when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is traveling through European capitals to garner support from allies against Trump.

The US President has been increasingly vocal about his desire to gain control over Greenland and does not rule out the use of military force or economic pressure to take the island from Denmark.

Mette Frederiksen has already visited Berlin and Paris on Tuesday morning to talk with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, and plans to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels.

"If Denmark calls for help, France will be there," Barrot said. "European borders are sovereign, whether it's north, south, east, or west... no one can afford to violate our borders."

Barrot also stated that during the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels on Monday, January 27, his colleagues expressed their "very strong support" for Copenhagen and "were ready to consider sending troops" if necessary.

However, the French Foreign Minister asserted that he does not believe the US will invade Greenland.

"This will not happen, people do not invade EU territory," he said.

Background. As reported, Trump had a tough conversation with Prime Minister Frederiksen regarding the purchase of Greenland. He "threatened specific economic measures, such as targeted tariffs."

Greenlanders "do not want to be Americans," stated Mute Egede, the island's Prime Minister. Mette Frederiksen has also declared that "Greenland is not for sale and will not be sold."
