President of France Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are planning to persuade US President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to launch strikes deep into Russia using long-range Storm Shadow missiles before he leaves the White House.
This is reported by The Telegraph citing sources within the British government.
According to them, the leaders of France and the UK will discuss this issue during a meeting in Paris on November 11. The politicians hope that Biden will agree to their proposal, wishing to preserve his political legacy.
Macron and Starmer also intend to discuss ways to prevent the US from reducing military aid to Ukraine after Donald Trump assumes the presidency.
“We really want to ensure that we can make the most effective use of the time until January 20 [when Trump becomes president], rather than just putting everything off until the next administration,” explained a senior source in the British government.
Another source told The Telegraph that Biden is expected to "open the taps" regarding the provision of additional financial assistance to Ukraine in the months leading up to his departure.
Previously, Starmer promised to work closely with Trump. If the elected US president views his actions as a blow to his foreign policy, their relationship may be jeopardized even before Trump's inauguration, The Telegraph notes.
Earlier, Ukraine presented the US and the UK with a list of potential targets in Russian territory that it could strike with long-range Western weapons. Among them are command points, fuel and ammunition depots, as well as troop concentration areas.
However, the Biden administration has declined to allow Kyiv to carry out such strikes.
In addition to American ATACMS, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can use British Storm Shadow and identical French SCALP missiles. However, due to the presence of American components, the UK must obtain permission from the US before agreeing to strikes on Russian territory using Storm Shadow. Meanwhile, Paris does not require Washington's approval.
