The Lutsk City District Court has sentenced 48-year-old Konstantin Soroka for causing a fatal traffic accident while under the influence. The defendant, driving a Geely vehicle, struck a 58-year-old pedestrian, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. As a result, the driver was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. Additionally, he is required to pay the deceased's family a compensation of 1 million UAH.
As stated in the verdict dated January 31, the accident occurred on November 8 in the village of Promin, Lutsk District. According to the investigation, the 48-year-old Geely driver hit the pedestrian who was walking along the roadside. The collision resulted in multiple injuries for the 58-year-old man, who died before the ambulance arrived. It is known that the driver of the car was the intoxicated Lutsk resident Konstantin Soroka, who did not possess a driver's license.
In court, the defendant admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. He confirmed that he had consumed three liters of strong beer before the accident. He requested a lenient sentence and noted that he had compensated the deceased's family with 41,700 UAH.
Judge Volodymyr Khilyuk found Konstantin Soroka guilty under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violating traffic regulations while intoxicated, resulting in the death of the victim) and sentenced him to 7.5 years in prison, along with a nine-year ban on driving vehicles. Furthermore, the defendant was ordered to pay the deceased's family a total of 1 million UAH in moral compensation. The decision can still be appealed in the appellate court.
