Ellis Stefanik, chosen by Donald Trump to serve as the U.S. representative to the UN, avoided questions about her previous support for Ukraine's NATO membership and her characterization of Russia's war in Ukraine as "genocide." Her office stated that her views now align completely with Trump's, reports CNN.
Shortly after the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the Republican congresswoman declared that Ukraine should be "admitted to NATO, and we must do everything possible by providing them with ammunition and Javelins." She noted that the weaponry was first supplied to Kyiv during the Trump administration.
When CNN inquired about this after Trump proposed her nomination to the UN, Stefanik's office stated that her views fully align with those of the elected president, without going into further details.
"Stefanik fully supports President Trump's policy agenda of peace through strength and will follow his example as Commander-in-Chief to end the war in Ukraine," quoted CNN her communications director, Ali Black.
Stefanik was among the 400 members of the U.S. House of Representatives against whom Russia imposed sanctions, which she referred to at the time as a "badge of honor."
As public opinion in the U.S. regarding aid to Ukraine shifted, and some Republicans increasingly opposed it, she also voted against a $60 billion aid package, which was ultimately passed in April 2024.
Following Trump's victory, she was appointed to lead the U.S. mission to the UN.
"Eliis is an incredibly strong, resilient, and smart first fighter for America," said Trump.
Background. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Trump officially nominated Marco Rubio for Secretary of State. Recently, Rubio stated that the war in Ukraine would end through negotiated settlement, a view also supported by Trump.
