The generating companies of DTEK RES have commenced the issuance of guarantees of origin for electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES).
This was reported by the company's press service.
“Ukraine has begun the journey of developing a market for guarantees of origin for electricity from RES. We are confident that with each passing year, the interest of socially responsible businesses in these guarantees will only increase. As a result, this will boost the demand for electricity from RES and encourage the expansion of new green energy capacities in the country,” stated DTEK RES CEO Oleksandr Selishchev.
Any business interested in branding its products as produced using renewable sources and possessing the corresponding ecological value can purchase green electricity (guarantees of origin), the company reminded.
For export-oriented enterprises, this will provide additional competitiveness for their products in the future. Specifically, in the EU market, where stricter environmental requirements regarding the types of energy sources used for production are in place.
Moreover, the state is considering options to stimulate domestic demand for guarantees of origin for enterprises that emit pollutants. By purchasing these guarantees, they will be able to reduce their CO2 emission tax burden, as this will help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
“At the same time, the development of international trade in green energy and, as a result, attracting additional international investments to Ukraine requires the recognition of guarantees of origin issued in Ukraine at the EU level. For such recognition, the state must meet the necessary conditions outlined in the roadmap expected from the EU,” the company noted.
Guarantees of origin are automatically generated in the relevant register based on certified data regarding the commercial accounting of electricity produced from RES. The volume of guarantees of origin issued to RES producers corresponds to the amount of electricity released into the grid: 1 MWh = 1 guarantee of origin.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Ukrainian companies had purchased nearly 40,000 guarantees of origin for “green” energy from “Ukrhydroenergo.”
