The daughter of Iryna Farion, Sofia Semchyshyn-Osoba, filed a complaint with the police regarding a mocking joke made by Studio "Kvartal 95" about her murdered mother. This concerns a broadcast of last year's episode of "Kvartal 95," which aired on December 29 on the "1+1" channel. In one segment of the show, the parents discuss their son's girlfriend, who is a TikTok blogger. The parents criticize the girl's activities, and one of them states: “If Arestovych and Farion were together, this would be their daughter.”
The head of the "Svoboda" political party, Oleg Tyahnybok, responded to the unfortunate joke.
“It is possible to have political opponents, to criticize and even to make ironic comments about them. However, what Studio Kvartal 95 has done is entirely beyond the bounds of morality and humanity,” stated Tyahnybok, adding that he demands an apology from "Kvartal 95."
“Sofia's lawyer has already submitted a statement demanding punishment for those responsible, an apology, and the removal of all mocking materials about Iryna Farion from the public domain to the highest legislative, executive, and judicial authorities,” reported Oleg Tyahnybok.
Sofia Semchyshyn-Osoba also reacted to the episode. On her Instagram page, she wrote that Iryna Farion was killed for her stance on the Ukrainian language and her Ukrainian position.
“You will not be forgiven for mocking the fallen Ukrainians,” wrote Sofia Semchyshyn-Osoba.
Two days after the broadcast, on Tuesday, December 31, the "1+1" channel responded to the scandal and issued an apology.
“We apologize to all those who were affected and offended by the inappropriate joke about Iryna Farion. The episode that aired on December 29 is one of the old episodes. Unfortunately, a mistake was made, and a joke that should not have been aired remained in the program. Joking about a person who tragically lost their life is absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances, even if it concerns an old episode. Thorough checks of archival materials will be conducted, and measures will be taken to prevent similar situations in the future,” reads a statement from the channel.
During a plenary session of the Lviv City Council on Tuesday, December 31, "Svoboda" deputy Lyubomyr Melnychuk read a statement demanding an apology for the unfortunate joke from the Ukrainian people and Iryna Farion's daughter.
Recall that Iryna Farion died from a gunshot wound on July 19 on Masaryka Street, near her residential building. On July 25, law enforcement arrested the suspect in the murder, 18-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko, at his residence in Dnipro. He is currently in pre-trial detention without the right to bail.
In December, the police submitted the case to court and reclassified the case to intentional murder due to the performance of public duty, motivated by national intolerance. Vyacheslav Zinchenko faces a sentence of 10 to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment for his actions.
